Chapter Thirteen

Etterian battleship, Kushin

En route to Yithia

Communications room

12252 years, 4th - 5th month

Michel burst into the comm room with far more energy than was usual. “Ulriq, have you seen Jack?”

Not lifting his gaze from his tablet, he shook his head. “We are to meet at the evening meal.”

“The girls haven’t seen her. They said a male collected her.”

Ulriq’s whipped his head up to meet Michel’s wide gaze. “A male? No name?”

Michel paced in the narrow confines of the comm room. “Eric or something. They said he asked for her specifically, for the female who took down two alien soldiers, but that was hours ago.”

The fear in the human male’s voice brought on a twinge of concern, but Ulriq brushed it aside. It was a large battleship, and Jack had an O.D.I. Rising, he placed his hand on Michel’s shoulder.

“Calm, Michel. We will trace her.” Frowning, Ulriq faced his pilot. “Ksal, locate Jacqueline Dunois.”

Ksal’s fingers flew across the multi-lit console as he punched the buttons. “She is not on this vessel, Supreme Commander.”

“Look again,” Ulriq growled; a sharp sensation pressed on his lungs. Emotions were new to him, but this one, this painful debilitating emotion he recognized as fear. He experienced it far too much since meeting Jack.

“I have, Ulriq,” Ksal met his gaze.

“How is this possible?” Ulriq boomed. “We are on a battleship.”

“I have verified no unauthorized ports have occurred. No shuttles have left any docking bays. No unusual spacecraft in our vicinity. There’s nothing out of the ordinary across all stations.”

“How can she just vanish?” Michel’s voice rose in his agitation.

“Stealth porting can only occur with a temirian device. Those are rare and expensive. Such a device could penetrate the battleship’s dampening shield,” Ksal said with his fingers still flying across the console. “There was an unusual power reading close to the engine rooms. Because of its proximity to the fusion drives, the reading was ignored.”

Ulriq stiffened. “Where?”

“Storeroom 516S.”

“Ksal, send Prex to that location.” Ulriq broke into a run, with Michel attempting to keep up.

His males dove out of his path, not that Ulriq paid them any attention. He prayed to the Maker as he ran, asking that he wouldn’t find anything. As he burst into the storeroom, fear struck hard and fast. His chest constricted as he fell to his knees, his vision spinning. There in the middle of the room stood a lifeless pyramidal device.

His Jack was gone.

“What is it?” Michel panted and clung to the door frame.

Ulriq glanced at him and recognized the emotion on the human’s face since it saturated his own heart.

“A temirian,” he whispered, his voice cracking; emotions bubbled to the surface, and his control was at breaking point. He had to calm himself; he had to think. Jack depended on him to find her, save her.

“She’s gone?” Michel demanded, fear and anger warring in his voice.

Ulriq understood what the male was going through. She was his sister...but she was more than that to Ulriq, she was his life force.

“Supreme Commander,” Data Officer Prex greeted as he entered the storeroom and crossed to the device.
